In Louisiana, Zydeco music is of a black Cajun/Creole origin and my
understanding is that blacks during the Civil War could not express themselves musically, as a fear of being organized could lead to no work being done. What they did during their breaks, which I'm sure were far and few between, would be to take the snap beans that they picked and move them up and down on washboards, thus the origins of Zydeco music. Today, as you know it has become a very popular form of music, but this only came about 10 years ago. The music has been around over 100 years.
